Representatives of 22 parties from different countries, which call themselves "pirates", held a conference in Brussels, the result of which was the official foundation of the international federation PPI - the International Pirate Party. Speaking at the conference, Christian Engström, a member of the European Parliament from the Swedish Pirate Party, said that international cooperation of pirate parties is necessary to spread their advanced ideas in the world. Pirate parties exist in more than 40 countries of the world. The eruption of the Icelandic volcano prevented some from going to the conference in Brussels. And someone simply did not have enough money for a ticket. To give them the opportunity to speak and vote for the pirate International, the organizers of the meeting set up video bridges.
But the forum turned out to be quite representative anyway. Even France Phone Number delegates from Brazil and Russia came to it. One of the leading organizers of the conference on the international association of this movement was the Belgian Pirate Party. This is what its general secretary, linguist Monika Kornatsky, told RFE/RL: - We have people from different language communities: residents of Brussels, Flanders, Wallonia... Therefore, we consider ourselves a federal party. It is important for us to represent different layers of society. We have different origins. Jürgen Rato, co-chairman of the party, is the only native Belgian and a representative of both Flemish and French-speaking cultures. The second co-chairman, Marouane, is Moroccan. And I'm Polish. As you can see, we represent today's Belgium.
Jurgen Rato answered the question about the social composition of the party: - Our movement is often perceived as a movement of intellectuals from an academic university environment. This is both true and false. There is an academic intelligentsia in the movement, but it is by no means the only one forming the party. There are also workers. But among us you will find those who have no qualifications at all. These people are brought together by information technology. On this basis, we are sometimes considered a party of informants. But the recent international conference very convincingly showed that this is not the case. In our movement there are artists, representatives of creative professions, people from the world of jurisprudence, philosophers, sociologists, mathematicians. But everyone has a common interest: exchange of information, that is, knowledge. - Do you oppose monopoly on intellectual property and want to abolish copyright? - Everything is much more complicated. It is necessary to decide on what to call intellectual property.
